Bunbury Open History

2026 Bunbury Open Writeup

The 3rd annual Bunbury Open was the biggest ever, attracting 30 players from across WA. 11 Bunbury Locals, 14 from Perth and 5 from Country WA ranging all the way down to Denmark. Congratulations to the 2026 Bunbury Open Champion Bradley Lucas! Winning with a perfect 6/6 score. The first perfect score in Bunbury Open history.

Also well done to the runner up Josh Davoll with a well fought 5/6.

Josh vs Bradley’s game in the penultimate round was very interesting; Bradley defended well from a bad position and came out the victor, ultimately clinching the tournament. The decisive moment was 34. e8=Q?? where whites advantage was lost and it went back to equal. See the full game below:

Young 13 year old Uudamkhishig Togtmol rated 1074 scored some big upsets defeating Michael Molenaar rated 1785 and another 1650 player on his way to 4/6 and tied 5th overall. Well done Uudam!

Clint Stewart seeded 8th had a great tournament to finish 3rd overall and winning the best under 1800 prize.

Stephen Mazza was Bunbury’s best player with 4/6 and had a nice win over former 3x state champion David Ellis.

The players were well fed with Bunbury locals bringing in cake, cheese, sausage, biscuits and fresh fruit from the Bunbury Farmers Market. Many players commented it was one of the best chess venues they’ve been to, and the tournament was well run, we hope the word gets out further and we have a bigger turnout next May.
